A quiet lake, brolgas and ibis sweeping majestically through the air, a manicured lawn in the foreground, a wide bush vista with magnificent rocks strewn about like a giant’s playground in the background and gum-covered mountains on the horizon, that’s the view from the terrace of the Wellum’s Lake Guest House. This wonderful little guest house, café and artefact shop is tucked away on the Settler’s Road in St. Albans. About 1 ½ hour’s drive from the Sydney CBD, this is the ideal lunch-spot on a journey from the city via Wiseman’s Ferry and St. Albans to Central Mangrove and back. The café is open for lunch and dinner on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The food is Mediterranean, good, hearty and lots of it. Everything is fresh and obviously home made and the coffee is excellent. It is BYO and they don’t mind your dog sitting next to you on the terrace, as long as it is controlled, behaves and doesn’t bother anyone. We thoroughly enjoyed the view, the sun, the exceptionally friendly service and the good food and it made our “country Sunday” really special. What a find! (but pssssst! Don’t tell anyone, we don’t want it getting too crowded now, do we?)
