Macleay
Street Bistro
By Franz Scheurer
It’s tiny, it’s comfortable, it’s quiet, it’s a fun spot for a quick bite and it’s BYO. Macleay Street Bistro is very much the typical bistro with food to match. Simple dishes cooked with care and served with a smile in a timely fashion. I like the atmosphere, the décor and don’t mind the rather cramped seating.
Try the ‘Semolina Gnocchi’, Roman style gnocchi served with a Gorgonzola sauce, wilted spinach and gorgeous walnuts ($16.50) or feast on the ‘Crab Cakes’ with ginger glaze and Asian leaves ($16.50). For mains you can’t go wrong with the ‘Beer Battered Flathead’ served with crisp, thin chips and a good tartare sauce ($23.50), then again, don’t overlook the blackboard specials either. Just make sure you leave room for desserts; they shine! A very good rendition of ‘Chocolate Mousse with Coffee Granita’, ($13.50) is a sign of chef Ben Fitton’s time with Janni Kyritsis at Fuel Bistro, and the ‘Layered Crème Brûlée with Orange Baked Rhubarb ($13.50) is stunning.
Macleay Street Bistro is fun and it’s open on Monday nights!
