Filicudi is the name of an Aeolian Island near Sicily and the name of an Italian restaurant in Five Dock that has been in the hands of the same family for 18 years. Today’s regulars more than likely spent some time in a bassinette in this institution and the family atmosphere is both unmistakable and charming.
The interior is quaint, to say the least. There are exactly 223 empty Chianti bottles hanging from the ceiling, and one Spanish Rioja ring-in. Posters extolling the virtues of many things Italian cover old murals that have faded into insignificance and the table and chairs are utilitarian.
The menu is divided into entrées, pasta, pizza and mains meals. There is a separate dessert menu and there are daily blackboard specials. The pizzas are good with the Primavera and the Parma proving to be the most popular at our table. Pastas are served al dente, the sauces are slow cooked, the servings plentiful and tastes are ‘like Mama cooks them’. The best dish of the night succulent veal Osso Bucco in a thick meaty tomato sauce with bite.
The wine list is a surprise. Someone spent a bit of time getting it right and making it interesting. You may BYO but with this list, there really is no need. Service is ‘familiar’ and therefore a bit erratic but the smiles make up for this.
The ‘Mascarpone’ a Tira Misu style dessert, served in a glass is excellent and the coffee, as expected, is superb. This restaurant is good value for money and will hopefully still be there in another 18 years.
