Notes: Illegal distilling has been known to take place since 1790's.
The distillery used their own floormalting 7 days a week until 1976, when Hiram Walker (now Allied Domecq) bought the distillery. Then it was gradually reduced until it finally stopped in 1980.
The distillery was mothballed 1981-1989 and again 1996-1997.
Glenmorangie bought the distillery in February 1997 for £7 million and started distilling again.
The distillery is equipped with 1 wash still and 1 spirit still. The water comes from Loch Uigeadail about 5 miles from the distillery.

Notes: Bowmore is one of the few distilleries still producing its own floormalted barley. The stillhouse holds 4 stills. The water is from the Laggan River, about 8 miles away.
The hot water from the distillation process is used to heat a swimmingpool in one of the old warehousebuildings.
Bowmore's distillery mouser, Smoky, was one of the most famous mousers: Amongst the seven most beautiful cats in GB, appearing in the "Literary Cat Calender 2000", and subject of a poem written by Robin Laing!

On 15 June 1993 Strathisla received an unexpected visitor from Louisville, Kentucky; a young black and white cat fell asleep among some bourbon barrels in a container awaiting shipment to Scotland. On opening the container some four weeks later, the cat staggered out, weak from hunger and drunk from the bourbon fumes in the enclosed space. After six months' quarantine, the cat, for obvious reasons called Dizzy, is now employed by Chivas Bros. as a "mouser"
